Vaccine will be late
PA Wellington A new vaccine developed to combat a different strain of flu virus this winter would not arrive in time to vaccinate people, said the director of health promotion for the Health Department, Dr Campbell Begg. The department has been waiting for overseas pharmaceutical companies to produce a vaccine containing a new flu strain, APhilippines. The new strain is not expected to be any more serious than other strains already experienced and is likely to be similar. However, existing flu vaccines will only be marginally effective. People with medical conditions which are likely to be aggravated by catching the flu were advised to be vaccinated with existing vaccines, said Dr Begg. “The present vaccine will cover some of the viruses expected and may give marginal protection against the new A-Philippines strain.
