‘Fastest broom in town’
Showing the form that won him the award for the hardest-working participant in the “fastest broom in town” competition in Cathedral Square yesterday, the Mayor of Christchurch, Sir Hamish Hay, heaps up a big pile of rubbish. Sir Hamish was one of a group containing city councillors and news media personalities who raced to pile up as much rubbish as they could in a given time, to promote cleanliness and civic pride. The activity reinforced the Clean School Competition which embraces 48 schools in Christchurch. It also acknowledged the City Council’s revival of the Civic Pride Committee. Jim Anderson won a certificate for speed while Cr Kathie Lowe was judged the most stylish sweeper. The Wizard adjudicated.
