Canty’s quest begins

A thoroughly-prepared 3ZM Canterbury is hoping for a commanding performance when it begins its quest for the Countrywide National Basketball League title against Exchequer Saints, of Wellington, in Cowles Stadium this evening. “I think we are ready to go,” said the Canterbury coach, Mr Murray Mackay, yesterday. “Like every coach I feel that there are some things we could do better, but I am reasonably satisfied.” Mr Mackay has put his squad through a demanding series of preliminary representative matches as part of the build-up and he is satisfied that this has been helpful: “We won seven and lost one, and although the opposition was not as strong as we will meet in the national league, this should be of great benefit to us.” Twelve players have been named for the match, including six present at former New Zealand representatives — Andy Bennett, John Hill, Burt Knops, Dave Usmar, Gilbert Gordon and; John Rademakers. This provides a solid core of ability which should be at least the equal of anything the team might meet in the national contest.
Only a former New Zealand player,' -John Fairweather, is not available for the opening match. He has a knee injury and has decided to rest. Other members of the team are Lance Dixon, Korrie Ritsma, lan Webb, Bede Hall, Chris Dobbs, and the skilful American guard, Clyde Huntley, who has been named captain.
