Baby born in Buller ambulance
Westport reporter A Westport woman gave birth to a son in an ambulance at the doors of Buller Hospital’s Kawatiri Annex on Tuesday night after her transfer to Greymouth was abandoned. Mrs Karen Walsh was admitted to Kawatiri early in the afternoon, when labour began in earnest soon after 9 p.m. Her doctor had earlier, decided on a transfer to Base Hospital.
“I knew I would not make it,” she said. The ambulance had gone only a short distance when it became obvious that the birth was imminent and a decision was made to turn back.
Sean Walsh, 51b 130 z, arrived at 10.55 p.m. as the ambulance pulled up at Kawatiri.
His father, Mr Wolif, Walsh, missed the birth because he was at home looking after the other son, Damian aged two. Both mother and baby are well.
