Reading problems
Sir,—Some years ago I gave a talk to a P.T.A. on reading. I was preceded by a teacher on the staff. She amused the parents by referring to old-time teachers who “taught children to bark at print" (phonics). She had been on a refresher course. I followed to explain my barks; these had enabled 50 children to read and spell. Do I see, an about-face in SPELD’s policy? The question arises then, “by whom?” Training colleges do not know how to teach reading, so cannot teach others. The beginning of change will be when the present “authorities” admit they are wrong — an unlikely event. — Yours, etc., V. H. ANDERSON. May 6, 1983.
