Shipping news Big coal exports planned
Up to 250,000 tonnes of West Coast coal will be exported from Lyttelton between June and next March. The amount is about the same as last year when more than 227,000 tonnes of coal was exported to Korea and Japan. “The board is very pleased with this year’s figure,” said the traffic manager, Mr David Jones. This year between 210,000 and 250,000 tonnes would pass through the port. The first export shipment will be made some time after June 15 when a vessel, which has not yet been named, will load 30,000 tonnes of coal. All exports will this year go to Japan. Mr Jones said 100 railway waggons a day would transport the coal from the West Coast to Lyttelton. About 7000 tonnes of coal a week will be unloaded at the port’s stockpile, which now holds more than 24,000 tonnes. ARRIVALS Union Hobart (6.30 a.m.), 7299, Wellington (U.M.S.).
