Trading on Sundays supported
PA Auckland The Minister of Tourism, Mr Talbot, said yesterday that he supports Sunday trading. The owners of about 25 Parnell shops have applied to the Shop Trading Hours Commission to open on Sundays. Mr Talbot said that more outlets and more flexible hours were necessary to cater for the increasing number of overseas tourists.
"I have heard of people who have gone back to Japan and other countries taking money back they should have spent in New Zealand,” he said. He was not a lone voice in the Government over the idea. Nor did he think he yet had the majority of support needed to change legislation.
Mr Talbot said he hoped unions would not obstruct moves towards Sunday trading, as they had done when retailers wanted to open on Saturdays.
