Second reading thwarted
PA Wellington The Chief Opposition Whip, Mr J. L. Hunt, accused the Government early yesterday morning of adjourning the House to deliberately ensure that his Adult Adoption Information Bill would not be given a second reading. The bill, which provides for adopted persons to gain access to information about their birth parents, affected 100,000 New Zealanders, he said.
There was “no reason whatsoever” why the bill could not be allowed a second reading, he said. He had been promised support from both sides of the House for the measure, one which he has attempted to bring in on several previous occasions.
Mr Hunt’s private member’s bill was introduced in the House last year. At the end of last year’s session, the Leader of the House, Mr Thomson, moved that it be carried over to this year’s session.
Mr Hunt said he was prepared to come to the House “any day of the year” to speak in the secondreading debate on his bill.
