Lyndon’s mounts may win Poverty Bay double

Special correspondent Palmerston North

The mounts of the top apprentice, Maree Lyndon, seem set to win the day’s T.A.B. double at the Poverty Bay meeting, which opens tomorrow.

Lyndon is to ride Claymore Boy in the Poverty a Gold Cup while Irma’s appeals as a bright prospect in the second leg, the Thos. Corson Handicap. Claymore Bay has shown he has the qualities to win good staying races as when he won the Watkins Handicap at Trentham in the spring. Unfortunately, the gelding bled during the running of the Rotorua Cup shortly afterwards and had to be spelled. He resumed at the Hawke’s Bay meeting recently and in his third run from a spell ran a good race over 1600 m at Otaki last week.

There has been a spell of fine weather in Gisborne and the track is certain to be firm, which will suit Claymore Boy. Nazman and Avitt will be well supported, especially the latter, which has numbered among his wins a Prime Minister’s Cup in Queensland and earlier in the season won the Rotorua

Cup. There have been several murmurs about the rating of Avitt in the race but when winning the Rotorua Cup, Avitt received 4kg from Claymore Boy and this time gets I.skg. Since that race Claymore Boy has raced three times without success and Avitt has raced eight times for a fourth and two fifths. Nazman won the Taumarunui Cup last July and after an unsuccessful Australian campaign resumed recently at Tauranga. He has been a winner at Gisborne in the past and must play a prominent role. Claremont Wonder is top weight after some good races in both handicaps and highweights while Crawford’s Boy is a galloper with plenty of ability. However, his form fell away badly during the summer but he could come back to his best with the advent of easier ground.

Irma’s Gold has been waiting for firm ground for some time and the Woodville trainer, Bruce Marsh, has opted for Gisborne in his search to add to the mare’s fine record.

She has not raced since March but her four wins on the trot will earn her favouritism in the event, which is the second leg of the double.

Penny Dee will be hard to beat. She was second to Axeman at Avondale last week and her form has been good right through. Affair d’Honneur is joint top weight with Penny Dee and Prior’s Luck.
