Bound to Honour fancied at Auckland tomorrow

Special correspondent Auckland

Even under 57.5 kg, a fair burden for one of her small stature, Bound to Honour looks one to beat in the Nolan Handicap at the Auckland Racing Club’s meeting at Ellerslie tomorrow.

Since she first showed form this season, at Tauranga back in September, Bound to Honour has hardly been out of the money. Only six times did she fail to weigh-in and that was out of 19 attempts. One occasion was when she finished seventh in the Wrightson Wellington Cup, another when she came in midfield behind McGinty in the Air New Zealand Stakes at Ellerslie.

Two starts back she carried 55.5 kg to a game win in the 2400 m Chalmers Handicap at Trentham on March 12. She was third, meanwhile, behind Golden Rhapsody in the Honda Civic, a weight-for-age 2200 m race at Avondale on March 23.

As well as being a stout little stayer Bound to Honour seems able to manage any type of footing.. The track was very firm when she won the weight-for-age Trentham Stakes in January and quite soft on the many times she ran so prominently during the spring. Bound to Honour is required to give away up to 10.5 kg in the Nolan Handicap and that sets her a task even if so many of the others do not seem' up to her class. The hardest for her to beat might be Pawky, Short Sand Turanganui, each tart placegetters. Turanganui looked near to his bet again when he made the running over 2200 m at Avondale last Saturday and was pegged back by Von Cettes in the last few strides.

Turanganui will get 7kg from Bound to Honour, Pawky skg and Short Stops Bkg.

Pawky was a winner last time at Ellerslie in the 2200 m President’s Handicap on April 12. Meanwhile, he has gone on with the good form for a third and a second at the recent Bay of Plenty meeting. Short Stops has been un-

able to win since successful at Pukekohe last October but she has been racing better lately, a consequence, perhaps, of wearing blinkers.

A further appearance of Prince Majestic, one of the best gallopers of recent years, makes the second leg of the double, the Ellerslie 5000, specially interesting.

Prince Majestic has 58kg, but not too much for one of his undoubted class. As a five-year-old he has been a little while longer this time up coming to form but there was a sign in his training on Thursday that he could be getting close. Prince Majestic will have no shortage of opponents but few with much worth while recent form.
