Bridge blast man gives $400

An offer of $4OO from Mr Geoffrey Douglas John Mackley — the man who blew up the bridge in Lees Valley — has been accepted by the Oxford County Council. A letter received by the council from Mr D. H. P. Dawson, the solicitor who acted for Mr Mackley in his Court appearances, said that after Mr Mackley had discussed the matter with his parents, he accepted that he had caused the council some inconvenience. Mr Dawson said that as a matter of conscience rather

than because he accepted that there was any necessary legal liability, Mr Mackley wished to offer to pay something towards the cost the council incurred. Mr Dawson said that after the Judge had heard the circumstances of the matter, and in particular that the bridge was due for demolition, he was not satisfied that the cost incurred by the council in cleaning up the mess would have been in excess of the cost of removing the bridge. There was no order for restitution.
