Arthur’s Pass road
Sir,—The Ministry of Works is to be congratulated on its continued upgrading of State highway 73. The work referred to at the foot of the Cragieburn cutting is long overdue. The ice danger in winter Was very real, and the one-way bridge by Flock Hill is one of the worst on the highway. Over the last two years, I have seen, or seen evidence, of three collisions there. The road leading to the south approach of the Waimakariri bridge certainly needs attention. Heavy traffic is going to increase dramatically with the lifting of the 150 km rail restriction. Which is more important: human lives, or a few birch trees, which are not in short supply in that area. I strongly suggest that when that stretch of road is finished the Ministry start at Klondyke Comer and move through to Arthur’s Pass.—Yours, etc., M. R. MACDONALD, Annat, March 28, 1983.
