Soviet psychiatry

Sir, — The same question that J. Lane (March 9) asks of me can with more justice be asked of him, as he is the one making the allegations. Has J. Lane been to the U.S.S.R. “to prove that these hospitals and prisons are being used to punish those who oppose the atheistic, communist regime”? Can he name the sources of any of “the reports from authenticated sources” to support his charges? And who estimated “the 64 million Christians in the Soviet Union”? Unfortunately for Mrs Steyn’s case, Peter Reddaway, the author of the article to which she refers, was expelled from the Soviet Union in 1965, when an exchange student there, for activities incompatible with bis status as a foreign student.

He is hardly likely to be a reliable, objective, impartial witness. He is more likely to be pursuing a personal vendetta of vengeance, in his chosen career as a professional anti-Sovieteer. — Yours, etc., M. CREEL. March 18, 1983.
