Hawarden A. and P. show’s big day

The sun shone and temperatures soared for the seventysixth Hawarden Agricultural and Pastoral Show at Hawarden on Saturday. “A most successful day” was the description given by the president, Mr E. J. Millar. The standard of entries was very good, considering the prolonged drought in North Canterbury, he said. Sheep numbers were down slightly on last year mainly because of the drought, and entries in the heavy horse classes were also reduced. Gate takings were $l6lO, said Mr Millar. This was about the same as for last year’s Jubilee Show, when there was a record attendance. There was strong interest in the show with many people staying until late in the day to see the horse jumping completed. The trade display was the largest seen at the show with many firms and organisations exhibiting goods. Vehicles on display ranged from a doubledecker bus to traction engines. The showgrounds would be well-served by the new complex which was almost completed, said Mr Millar. The rugby club rooms have been extended to join on to the office building and squash courts are being built at the rear of the building.

Judges in the sheep section congratulated exhibitors on the standard of their entries in view of the drought. These comments were echoed by the three judges in the beef cattle section, who were impressed bj' the quality of the stock presented. The judge in the donkey section, Mrs J. Usher, said that the over-all standard was high. There has been a big improvement over the last two years, but there was still room for more, she said. Among the more unusual competitions was the sheaf throwing. This event was very popular with spectators and competitors alike. The tray for the most points in the Home Produce section went to Mrs I. Wilde. L. Edgar won the prize for the most points in the photography section. Horse championships Hack.—Miss T. Wilson’s Napoleon Durante; reserve champion, Mrs H. D. Jackson’s Heythrop. Hunter.—P.
