27 clothing redundancies
PA New Plymouth South Taranaki has been dealt another blow with the announcement that it will lose another clothing factory. Thirteen women will lose their jobs when Classic Fashions, Ltd, closes its Hawera branch on March 31. The 14 employees of Zemba, Ltd, at Patea have recently been told that they will lose their jobs in midApril. At one stage, Classic
Fashions employed 37 people in its factory, but in the last 12 months, machinists who left were not replaced. The Taranaki area manager, Mr Bill Jolly, said that the reason for the closing was rationalisation of the company’s activities. Classic Fashions, Ltd, also has plants in New Plymouth, Auckland, and Kamo (Whahgarei). A new building has been leased in New Plymouth, where the firm hopes to employ more machinists.
