Methven A. and P. Show

Fine, warm conditions, and a number of feature events brought in a large crowd and a record gate take at the Methven Agricultural and Pastoral Association’s annual show on Saturday. Wood cutting, steer riding, and a country cooking competition “bake-off’, events not held at other Mid-Canterbury shows, proved popular with visitors, according to the president of the association, Mr A. J. Dixon.

“It was a great show. Here we have one of the best oneday shows in the South Island,” Mr Dixon said.

Entries in the sheep section totalled a record 945. One of the competitors in this section came from Havelock, Marlborough, and another from Ward.

The increase was part of an over-all rise in entries. Other big gains were in the poultry, preserves, crafts and photography sections. Most of Saturday’s judges were pleased with the entries in the livestock sections and commended the breeders on their achievements.

Mr C. L. Shortus, of Timaru, said the animals entered in the suffolk section were of a very high standard for an autumn show. He said that although he had expected to see effects of the drought in the condition of the animals, no such signs were evident.

The steer riding competiton brought a light-hearted finish to the day’s activities. The winner of this event, Alastair Clemens, was up against some keen competiton. Results:—
