Draw in open chess

Two of New Zealand's best chess players. Vernon Small and Roger Nokes, both from Christchurch, shared first place in the Canterbury Chess Club's open championship at the week-end.

The pair dropped only half a point each in the tournament played under 40 minutes a man. time control. A good entry included seven from Nelson.

Small and Nokes met in an interesting encounter, agreeing to a draw, each player having 30 seconds left on their clock. Small exercised a lot of pressure throughout the 40 moves, and missed a couple of strong chances, but Nokes hung on tenaciously. The draw was a good result.

Third place went to Peter Cribbett.
