25p too much for dram man
NZPA London Scotch costs too much and the whisky industry in Scotland is suffering as a result, angry peers complained yesterday in Britain’s House of Lords.
They said that things will get worse because the duty on a bottle of spirits was increased by 25p (about 58c) in the annual Budget, this week.
That lifted the price of a bottle of Scotch to £6.75 ($15.50), of which £5.45 ($12.50) is tax. Lord Shinwell, aged 99, spoke of “this onerous tax” affecting sales of Scotch, which he called “the only sensible drink.”
He urged “justice for Scotland” by scrapping. the increase in duty in a bid to halt the decline in the industry.
