‘Dayuma’ based on killings
A dance production based on a true story of missionaries who were killed in the jungles of Ecuador in the 1950 s will open in Christchurch this evening. “Dayuma” is based on the story of five missionaries who made contact with a group of Auca Indians and flew into meet them, but were killed by the tribe. The production tells what happened to the tribe after the killings. It includes an audio-visual presentation of photographs of the missionaries and tapes of radio messages from their last mission.
“Dayuma" is the name of one of the first women in the tribe to become a Christian. She ran away from home and met the wives of
the missionaries who had been killed. She later returned to her tribe to tell them of the friendly intentions of the missionaries.
The production is produced and directed by Mr Colin Harbison, and has a cast of 27, mostly from overseas. It was premiered in the United States about a year ago and is being presented outside the United States for the first time. The production has been brought to New Zealand by Youth With a Mission, a world-wide mission organisation.
“Dayuma” will be performed at the Theatre Royal this evening and tomorrow, and next Friday and Saturday.
