Rose and Thistle could take Manawatu feature

Special correspondent Wellington

The Levin trainer, Errol Skelton, will have dual trans-Tasman interests tomorrow.

His major interest will be at Rosehill, near Sydney, when the filly. Our Flight meets McGinty for the first time.

Back home the stable will be represented by Rose and Thistle in the Massey Metric Mile, a $lO,OOO event at the Manawatu Racing Club's meeting at Awapuni, and after his thrilling run in the North Island Challenge Stakes, Rose and Thistle will take a power of beating.

So Dandy, later so unlucky in the $45,000 DB 1600, won the North Island Challenge Stakes in a quick time. Rose and Thistle, well back on the turn, came home very quickly to get second.

The four-year-old was having his first run since trying the Melbourne Cup of last year, and, providing the first-up effort has not taken too much toll, he looks set for another top effort. Bold Supreme will be the strongest opponent. He won well at Matamata and then finished quickly to beat all but Elmar in the UDC Finance Handicap. His last couple of runs have been over more ground, but he shows plenty of class. Desert Sabre, a local, has a fine record on the course and is most adept at 1600 m. Il Vento won well at New Plymouth mid-week and he too is capable of a strong mile.

The excellent sprinter, Pia Roona, looks the leading hope in the Australasian Breeding Stables 1200 m, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. Pia Roona won at Taranaki midweek with 57kg and tomorrow he has 54kg under the handicap. His form all along has been excellent. A stablemate, Le Cadeau, is also racing well and 1200 m is his best distance. He won two starts back at Napier Park and was third next time behind Colonal. Beaufort Lass looks to be the improver. She was having her first race at New

Plymouth on Monday since coming fourth in the Bayer Classic. She rattled home to get second and could improve on the effort. The Levin sprinter, High Tai, makes some appeal and so does Lens.
