Bach’s ‘Passion’
The Royal Christchurch Musical Society will again present Bach’s “The Passion of Our Lord According to St Matthew” at Christchurch Cathedral on March 23.
The society did not perform the Passion last year because of the closeness of a concert by the New Zealand Symphony Orchestra. A Wellington tenor, Robert Oliver, will sing the role of the Evangelist, which he also sang for the society for the first time, two years ago.
The other main role, Christus, will be sung by Bruce Carson, also from Wellington, who last sang it with the society three years ago.
Of the other four soloists, Judy Bellingham and Howard Harvey both sang in the last performance and in several previous ones.
The soprano, Jillian Bartram, will sing the Passion for the first time, although she has appeared with the society before. The tenor soloist, Neville Paris, will make his debut with the society.
The society’s choir will be joined by trebles from the Christ’s College Chapel Choir in the first chorus. The accompaniment will be by Wallace Woodley, and augmented strings of the Christchurch Symphony Orchestra.
