By the Way, a candidate for the $6750 New Zealand Leonard Memorial Stakes for two-year-old fillies at the Cheviot meeting at Addington on Saturday, was in winning form at the Motukarara trials yesterday. Runner-up to Honkin Del at Ashburton at her second start, and fifth at Addington last Wednesday after a slow beginning, By the Way won the two-year-old fillies heat narrowly from’ Natural Nat after disputing the pace over the last 800 m in Imin I.ls. The Nardin’s Byrd filly returned 3min 4.6 s for the 2200 m, the last 400 m in 30.15. Hanover Donna finished best from midfield to win the C2 and faster pacers heat in 3min 12.7 s for the 2400 m, the leaders returning Imin 0.5 s for the last 800 m. Hanover Donna beat Roydon Wonder, handy mostly, by a length and a half, with half a length to the pacemaker, Full View.
