New commander for frigate
Commander J. E. N. Welch, of Auckland, has been appointed commanding officer of H.MN.Z.S. Canterbur.', which is on patrol with the Royal Navy in the Indian Ocean.
Commander Welch also assumes command of the 11th Frigate Squadron. After joining the Royal New Zealand Navy in 1959. Commander Welch trained at the Britannia Royal Naval College. Dartmouth. He has served in H.M.N.Z. Ships Taranaki. Pukaki. Inverell, Mako, Otago, and H.M. Submarine Tapir. He saw service during the confrontation period in South-East Asia during the 1960 s as the navigation officer of the Taranaki, has been involved with Antarctic duties in the Pukaki, and took part in the Mururoa Atoll nuclear test deployment as the gunnery officer of the Canterbury. Commander Welch has held several posts at Naval Staff. Wellington, including
Director of Plans and. more recently. Director of Officer Postings and Appointments. He succeeds Captain C. J. Carl who has taken up an appointment in the personnel branch of Defence Headquarters. Wellington.
