Australian share prices decline
Australian share prices closed lower across the board in moderately-active trading, led by sharp declines among some leading mining stocks. The all-ordinaries index was down 5.3 points, or 1.0 per cent at 511.4, mainly because of a fall in the allresources index of 7.5 points,
or 1.8 per cent, to 397.6. The all-ordinaries was off 2.6 points at 652.4. Turnover totalled sAust22.s million, a figure inflated by unusually heavy trading in leading miner MIM. About 2.61 million MIM shares were traded, totalling sAustlo.s million. The great bulk was traded off-market
as one parcel comprising two million shares at 405 c each. MIM closed 15c lower at 412 c. Falls were widespread as declines outnumbered advances by a ratio of better than two to one — 136 to 68, with 167 traded issues unchanged.
