North Island jumpers will create interest

By

ALEX McMILLAN

The appearance of two top North Island jumpers. Metallic Ruler and Queen's Deputy, will highlight the Christchurch Greyhound Racing Club’s T.A.B. meeting at Queen Elizabeth II Park this evening. Both come south with big reputations to live up to and should have little difficulty measuring up against a rather weak line-up of southerners in the $lOOO Canterbury Hurdles, with only the smart Otago runner. Humbug Wonder, appearing likely to pose any sort of threat to them. The T.A.B. double will be on the two heats of the 560 m South Island championship (races six and nine). Most interest will centre on race nine, where most of the leading contenders are drawn. The New Zealand champion, Arkarita, is not well served with box No. 4 but is still likely to start favourite, while last season's South Island champion, Macluke, could be prominent from box No. 7, even though he has shown a distinct preference for inside draws. Sleep Easy, from the ace draw, could upset, while the chances of former track re-cord-holder, Petite Dancer, and last start Ashburton winners, Kim’s Ace and Lady Acclaim, could not be completely ignored. The first heat (race six) creates a problem for punters, with most of the form runners having done their latest racing over longer distances than the 560 m. Captain Kilty, badly drawn in box No. 5, is a good, honest type sure to be making ground strongly over the closing stages, while Misty Isle and Charlie’s Irish are thoroughly seasoned campaigners right up to winning against a field of mixed quality.
