Awapuni pair work in style

Special _correspondent

Palmerston North Engelberg and Commissionaire ran fine trails at Awapuni yesterday morning in preparation for feature races on the last day at Trentham tomorrow. Engelberg looks in with a fine chance in the St Leger while Commissionaire is likely to start favourite for the DB 1600, which has drawn a field of 10. Engleberg earned a St Leger start when he scored his third success from four starts at the Marton meeting last week. He has thrived in the meantime and his trainer, Margaret Bull, is not worried about the 2800 m. Engelberg will be ridden

by Paul Goss who has been in great form this season. Goss rode the first two winners at Trentham on Wednesday and nearly made it three when Amathusia was narrowly beaten in the final event. Engleberg has 55.5 tomorrow and Goss will have no trouble at that weight. Yesterday the Sir Tristram three-year-old ran 1200 m on the course proper. Engleberg took Imin 18s for the distance, the last 600 smartly in 38s. Commissionaire could not have been more impressive in his final trial. He galloped 1200 m in Imin 17.65, with Glenmana, the last 600 in 395. It will be a surprise if he is beaten in the DB 1600.
