Mushrooms warning

PA Wellington Taiwanese button mushrooms implicated in two separate outbreaks of botulism food poisoning in Australia are being withdrawn from sale in New Zealand, says a Deputy Director-Gen-eral, of Health, Dr R. A. Barker.

“As a precaution, consumers are advised not to eat any cans of champignons which are labelled ‘Product of Taiwan’ or have any word-

ing suggesting they originated in Taiwan,” he said. “Any consumers finding these 365 g cans should hand them in to their local district health officer or destroy the cans without opening them. “Although reports from Australia name two brands of canned champignons, the same goods could be packed under a variety of brands. For this reason, disregard

brand names and note only the country of origin of the canned champignons,” Dr Barker said. No canned straw mushrooms from Taiwan were reported, to be involved in the Australian incidents, he said. Most Christchurch supermarket chains were still checking yesterday if they stocked the mushrooms, but most did not think they sold them.
