New strain of influenza
PA Wellington A new strain of influenza is expected this winter, and health experts are busy working on a new vaccine. The World Health Organisation has warned that the new strain, called A-Philip-pines, is on the way. The flu vaccine which has been in use since 1980 therefore has to be updated. The vaccine was effective against the Bangkok, Brazil, and Singapore strains. But the new vaccine will replace the Bangkok strain with the A-Philippines.
Dr Campbell Begg, director of health promotion in the Health Department, said it had not yet been decided to proceed with the new vaccine, but he expected that the decision would be made soon. “There has not been any indication that we have had the A-Philippines here yet, but the chances are that we may be getting it soon,” said Dr Begg. He said that there was little information about the new strain yet. It was not known how virulent it was or now severe.
