Citadel near completion
•. Work on the Salvation 2\rmy Citadel in Victoria ■Sieet will be completed in ■May. Men are shown above -working on the final stages. “Everything is right up to schedule and in the last Stages of completion,” said -Captain David Bringans, “South Island public relations of' the Salvation XArmy, yesterday.
The total cost of the complex, including renovations and furnishings, is just over $1 million. The building, designed by Mr R. Evenden, complements the Christchurch Town Hall, with its fluted concrete-block walls. “He was concious that the Citadel should mould in with the surroundings because of its close proximity to the
Town Hall,” said Captain Bringans. The old citadel, which was built in 1886, three years after the establishment of the Salvation Army in Christchurch in 1883, was demolished in June last year because it had become an earthquake risk. In its 96 year, the citadel saw important events in the church’s history, including the visit of
its founder, General William Booth, in 1905. During construction of the new citadel, services have been held at the Civic Theatre in Manchester Street. .The new citadel will be formally opened by the territorial commander and Commissioner, Mr Dean Goffin, on Saturday, May 14.
