Cycling in mall

' Sir,—Does John Keith (March 10) not see the heavy, fuming trucks speeding through the City Mall. Many of these heavy vehicles damage considerably the tile base of City Mall. Also, I ’ have seen vehicles knock down rubbish bins within the mall. As a ratepayer, he should be more concerned about the high cost of repairs to damage caused by vehicles driving in the mall, instead of opposing the pollution-free, quiet running, undamaging bicycle. My reason for cycling in the City Mall is that I can travel at the speed of the vehicles mentioned above, therefore lessening the risk of being injured by such a vehicle, often seen travelling through at 15 km/h. I suggest that the City Council erects more cycle stands at entrances to the mall, therefore encouraging bicyclists to park their machines outside the confines of the “pedestrian mall.” — Yours, etc., GRANT P. O’BRIEN. March 10, 1983.
