Mormons hold conference

About 600 members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (Mormons) attended a conference in Christchurch at the weekend. < ■

The stake (diocese) conference was presided over by Elder John . Turner, the Church’s regional representative for the Wellington and Christchurch regions. Mr Turner said that the three sessions of the conference each had a "missionary flavour” and emphasised the need for each member to be committed to work within the Gospel. The purpose of the conference ; was to help train local church leaders, one of the main sessions being for

priesthood holders. “The conference is to help members in their. responsibilities and to give training in the thiiigs they should be doing. It is also held to uplift spiritually the members,” said Mr Turner.

Mr Turner was assigned to preside over the conference by the president’ of the Church’s Council of Twelve Apostles. He was born in England,, joined the Church in 1964 and moved to Wellington in 1967. He served stake president in Wellington for three years before becoming a regional,representative in 1980. The:position is unpaid. Mr Turner works as technical manager for a paint manufacturer.
