Dunedin tops in bowls

PA Wellington A mighty team effort by Dunedin ensured the team of a sound win in the final of the Rothmans inter-zone men’s bowls tournament in Wellington at the week-end. So thorough was their win that the last round yesterday did not have to be played, with Otago an unassailable eight points ahead of Wellington and Christchurch.

With a lead of four points after three rounds on Saturday. Dunedin shot further clear with convincing wins in each of the singles, pairs and fours yesterday.

lan Dickison won his singles 25-21, then the McConnell brothers. Stewart and Duncan, had a deserved 20-17 win in the pairs. The fours combination then set the seal on the tournament with a 23-13 win over Auckland.

The young fours team of Terry Scott (skip), Colin Hall, Ken Walker and Ernie Anderson completed the rounds unbeaten — a fine effort against players of the calibre of Doug RichardsJolly, Nick Unkovich and Bob McDonald, who were among the Auckland four.

Though Wellington and Christchurch each ended on 12 points, the capital team gained second place over-all on differential, with Taranaki edging Auckland out of fourth place, and Hawke’s Bay sixth on seven points. Wellington was a decisive winner of the junior intercentre bowls tournament, the final rounds of which were played at the Woolston W.M.C. at the week-end.

The Wellington pair of B. Grossan and J. Leach (s) won all its five games and it was well supported by the singles player, J. Madden, who had four wins. The four of S. Glavas, B. O’Reilly, J. October and B. Duffy (s) contributed six points, from three wins.
