U.S. team in trouble
NZPA-Reuter Buenos Aires John McEnroe and Peter Fleming beat Guillermo Vilas and Joe Luis Clerc 2-6, 10-8, 6-1, 3-6, 6-1 to haul the United States back into their first round Davis Cup match with Argentina.
The four-hour doubles victory made the score 2-1 in favour of Argentina.
Australia’s Paul McNamee and Mark Edmondson gave their country an unbeatable lead over Britain in Adelaide yesterday when they thrashed John Lloyd and Andrew Jarrett in the doubles. Edmondson and McNamee won 6-2. 9-11. 6-3. 6-2.
The victory put Australia 3-0 ahead in the tie with only today’s reverse singles to be played. Sweden and Rumania also took winning 3-0 leads after doubles victories.
In Bjaerred, Sweden's Anders Jaerryd and Hans Simonsson beat Indonesians Tintus Ariato Wibowo and Justedjo Tarik 6-2, 6-3, 6-3, while in Timisoara, the Rumanians Hie Nastase and Florin Segarceanu beat Hans Gildemeister and Belous Prajoux, of Chile, 6-3, 8-6, 6-4. Paolo Bertolucci and Adriano Panatta beat Matt Doyle and Sean Sorenson, of Ireland 3-6, 6-2, 6-2, 6-4 to give Italy, a 2-1 lead over Ireland in their Davis Cup first round tie at Roggio Calabria.
France took a winning 3-0 lead over the Soviet Union in Moscow when Vannick Noah and Henri Leconte beat Konstantin Pugayev and Sergei Leonyuk 6-2, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6. 6-3 in the doubles. India won the doubles to take an unbeatable 3-0 lead against Sri Lanka. The Indian brothers, Anand and Vijay Amritraj beat Arjun Fernando and Frank Sebaratnam 6-2. 6-4. 6-1. India'also won the first singles matches.
Brazil gained an unbeatable 3-0 lead over Colombia after winning the doubles in Bogota. The Brazilians, Cassio Motta and Carlos Kirmayr, beat Javier Restrepo and Rene Gomez 6-1, 7-9, 7-5, 6-2. Paraguay have taken an unexpected 2-1 lead over Czechoslovakia after winning the doubles match of their first round in Asuncion, Paraguay.
