Bogeyman Dunning strikes again

The veteran Northland left-hand batsman, Brian Dunning, has become the scourge of outlying Canterbury cricket teams. Last week he guided his side out of trouble to a first innings win over South Canterbury with a score of 130 in a Cyclone Hawke Cup match.

At the week-end he frustrated and confounded North Canterbury an its; cup challenge with a knock Of 132. Northland was rocking on its heels, at‘Cobham Oval, Whangarei, with eight wickets down' for 156, but Dunning added 142 with the assistance of the last two men. Bob Cunis and Karl Treiber. .

Despite a sound opening effort by Peter Williams, and

several other useful contributions, notably by Rod Fulton, North Canterbury was 89 runs in arrears with only two wickets standing at stumps yesterday. One day of play remains.

The match was a triumph for the Golden Oldies. Dunning is 42, and North Canterbury’s star bowler was Frank Rapley, aged 45, who took five for 90 off a maratnon 55 overs on the slow pitch. Scores were:—

Northland 298: J. Chitty 31, D. Lloyd 33, B. Dunning 132, R. Cunis 23; F. Rapley five for 90, C. Abbott two for 73. North Canterbury 209 for eight: P. Williams 57, R. Fulton 37, A. Devlin 24, R. Deans 26; W. Lloyd three for 53, K. Treiber three for 50.
