Big Hurunui puffball
A huge puffball found by Mr Gerald Frengley, of Avonhead, on the banks of the Hurunui River, will be presented to students at Lincoln College for laboratory purposes. The ball, which weighed B.Bkg when found, and measured 156 cm round, has lost at least a kilogram since it was picked. Mr Frengley, who is employed in farm management at Lincoln College, said the puffball was rapidly coming to maturity, when it would split to release vast quantities of spores. He said the puffball was said to be edible, but its strong smell was enough to put anyone off. He will send details of the puffball to the Guinness Book of Records.
