Sporting Show to keep big following today

Special correspondent Alexandra Sporting Show will retain a big following when he steps up to a middle distance in the Garrett Handicap, the first leg of the T.A.B. double at the Cromwell Jockey Club’s meeting today. The four-year-old son of Honey Crepe and Show Gate eclipsed his rivals over 1400 m on the first day of the meeting on Saturday when he came from last and made his run round the field on the home turn. He had been equally impressive when he won over the same distance at Wingatui at his previous start.

“He has settled in his races now so he can race over ground and I will keep Every Show for the sprints,’’ said his owner-trainer, Gordon Thomson, who is viewing major races at the Canterbury Jockey Club’s easter meeting for the talented brothers.

Sporting Show managed 2000 m successfully in the Cromwell Stakes and the Blue Riband at Waikouaiti as a three-year-old last season. He made the pace in both of those races.

Sporting Show will again be ridden by the Wingatui apprentice, Robin Montgomery, who carried 12 kilograms of lead to make the weight of 57kg on Saturday. He will carry half a kilogram less today. Auditory could be his stumbling block if any. She was ridden unusually at her most recent start in the Galaxy Stakes at Wingatui nine days ago and faded to fifth. This was not surprising when she dashed to a 10 length lead in the middle stages. Every Show, the three-year-old brother to Sporting Show which scored an impressive all the way win over 1400 m at Wingatui, heads the field for the Radford Handicap, the second leg of the T.A.B. double. He will again be ridden by the Riccarton apprentice, Sharon Reid, and should prove the hardest to beat.
