Change of fortune for Thompson
Special correspondent Alexandra Gallant Ace’s last to first win in the T.H.C Handicap at Cromwell on Saturday was a change of fortune for his trainer, Kelly Thompson, of Long Bush (near gill)Thompson has temporarily lost the services of Carillion, the good sprinter. Carillion has been turned out to recover from lameness in a hind leg. "It looks as though he has. strained the leg just below the hock joint,” said Thompson, who also gained minor placings with Royal
Souverain and Beau Willie on Saturday. Thompson returned home on Saturday night and he will be back for the second day of the meeting today with a fresh team, including Belsen’s Bank, Caparo and Abdicator.
Gallant Ace’s programme is undecided. “I will have to study the races available. It is a weight-for-age at Gore (March 18) and I don’t want to start him in that,” said Thompson. Gallant Ace has now won five races for his Invercargill owner, Mr Roy Spence, and should cope with a rise in class.
Jo Megs, the favourite in the T.H.C. Handicap, was a battling fourth, while the well supported Nottingham Belle finished last, She was feeling the ground according to her rider, Tane Matthews.
Julie Wilson had her first winning ride when Out of the Red stayed on well after disputing the pace tn the First Wakatipu Maiden. Wilson is apprenticed to Bob and John Heasley, who train the brother of Up the Creek. She will have prospects on another stable runner,- Security Note, in the Queenstown Travelodge Handicap today.
