Burma gets $11.9M for jade, gems
NZPA Rangoon, Burma Burma has piled up $11.9 million for its Government coffers in a week-long jade, pearl, and gems emporium. The amount was the highest obtained in the 20 years of the annual emporium, which this year attracted 300 gem merchants from 13 countries. Government officials said that jade auctioned brought in $7.5 million, pearls $3.9 million and gems and jewellery $531,000. The centre of attraction was a 33-tonne jade boulder found deep in Burma’s northern jungles. It was not for sale. Gem experts said the biggest previously known jade rock in Burma weighed 22 tonnes.
