Mr McGinty in line for $250,000 bonus

PA Sydney The gutsy Mr McGinty displayed his champion qualities vrith his sensational victory in the sAustloo.ooo Canterbury Guineas over 1900 m on Saturday.

His win was the first leg of the triple crown and he now has the chance of a $250,000 bonus if he can continue his form and win the $150,000 Rosehill Guineas over 2000 m on March 19 and the $250,000 A.J.C. Derby over 2400 m at Randwick on April 4. A delighted trainer. Colin Jillings, said after Mr McGinty’s win that the One Pound Sterling colt would be even better in the Rosehill Guineas. “I’m glad there is a fortnight until his next run and I'm sure you'll see an even better horse then." he said. Mr McGinty, a small three-year-old. had to overcome a chequered passage to grab the lead in the last 50m and then stave off the Zamazaan colt, Veloso. by a neck. The race was run at a fast pace which enabled Mr McGinty to break Rare Form’s record in running Imin 56.15. Mr McGinty, starting 10-to-9 on, was pushed back to fifth in the early stages before his jockey. Bobby Vance, was able to place him in fourth on the rails coining to the turn.

Vance then had to switch across the heels of the leaders in an effort to get Mr McGinty a run. Once clear the colt showed his stamina by catching the leaders in the last 50m. He just held out the fast finishing Spring Champion Stakes winner, Veloso, which also looks a good prospect for the longer distances. Mai Barnes.
