Coast-trained runners appeal at Greymouth

From ROSS DIXON

Greymouth The West Coast hopes, Russei Garnett and Lady Luca, make strong claims in this evening’s Greymouth Cup. the feature race of the Greymouth Trotting Club's autumn meeting.

The two paced splendid races on Saturday night to fill the minor placings behind Worthy Del and would benefit, from that race. Russel Garnett appeared to be travelling particularly well at the 800 m but struck traffic problems when making his run from the back over the final stages and in the end did well to get within two and half lengths of the winner.

Lady Luca continued her run of exceptionally bad luck when she was trapped wide early then forced to sit outside the leader for much of the journey. The Westport mare appeared beaten at the 400 m but fought on in the games of fashion to sneak through and snatch third late in the run home. A win to Lady Luca would only partly compensate for her efforts throughout the season.

Belter Skelter will not be out of her depth when she steps up to this grade (C 3 and 4) after her impressive first night win. She has drawn well and poses a big threat, as does Straight Row which was responsible for setting a solid pace on Saturday.

The second leg of the T.A.B. double is the West Coast Maiden Championship for maiden pacers with a stake of $5150. The race allows maiden winners from the first night to compete on equal terms with their penalty taking effect from after the meeting.

With this in mind the first night winners, Rameses and Nardin’s Doll, both look likely to draw most support. The Sam Ballantynetrained Rameses is a lightlyraced Noodlum three-year-old and will surely graduate to high company.

Nardin’s Doll is one of the contenders for Robert Dunn. She was heavily supported on the first night and fully justified that with an easy win.

Other likely prospects in a field selected on first night form are Treble Win, a gallant second on Saturday, Watbro Ford and one which may be allowed to slip out to good odds, the well-bred Kazatin, from the family of Locarno, and other smart performers.
