N.Z. lamb sales up in Britain
NZPA staff correspondent London The first new season’s New Zealand lamb went on sale at Smithfield. London’s meat market, after a very successful sales campaign. British consumers had bought 22 per cent more New Zealand lamb in the 16 weeks to February 12 than the comparable period in 1981-82, said Mr Brian Jeffries. the European director of the New Zealand Meat Board. The total volume purchased during this period was equivalent to 3.4 million carcases. Mr Jeffries said that the rise in sales of more than one fifth was a direct consequence of the success of continuous promotion by the board over the period. During that time the board ran its “January bonanza” promotion with cuts of New Zealand lamb offered to shoppers at 12 pence (26 cents N.Z.) a pound cheaper than the previous year.
