Regional sevens to Canty

Canterbury showed form befitting the Ranfurly Shield holder in taking out the regional final of the FreshUp seven-a-side rugby competition at Oamaru on Saturday.

The red-and-blacks romped in for 20 tries in their first four games- of the qualifying round, displaying a fine level of fitness for this stage of the season. Only Otago was able to offer them any real resistance.

Southland emerged on bop in the opposite pool, relying heavily on the talents of Stephen Pokere in the process. Pokere scored a total of 37 points in his side’s last two qualifying games. Canterbury was down 10-8 at half-time in the final, after two tries apiece for the Southland winger, Paddy O'Brien, and the Canterbury halfback, Alan Lindsay.

■ln the second half, Don Hayes and Tony Dalziel were able to dominate possession, shutting Pokere out of the games. -Canterbury pulled away to a' comfortable 26-10 win, after second-half tries by lan Mather, Craig Green, and Dalziel. Andy McMaster converted all three.
