Soviet psychiatry
Sir,—M. Creel (February 27) has got it all wrong when he speaks of religious tolerance in the Soviet Union — well almost. The right bit is that "there are many Christians in the Soviet Union, members of the Russian Orthodox, Catholic and Lutheran churches” who are not persecuted “full stop.” These churches are under the strict surveillance of the Red Guards. Government help is given them for propaganda. Such churches are cold and insipid. But, may I ask M. Creel what would happen if evangelists like,Ray Comfort and others who preach regularly in Cathedral Square got up in Moscow’s Red Square to preach the same Gospel or what would happen to our flourishing charismatic churches if set up there? Well Bridget Steyn’s list (February 21) of known men and women who are in pyschiatric hospitals, prisons and prison camps for being wholehearted followers of Jesus Christ would greatly increase—Yours, etc., A. DELHANTY. February 26. 1983.
