Henri in form for Wyndham first leg

Special correspondent Invercargill

Henri has an appealing background for the MLT-DB Mobile Pace, first leg of the T.A.B. double on the opening day of the Wyndham Trotting Club’s autumn meeting tomorrow.

Henri has proved himself one of the most consistent and exciting pacers in the deep south in recent weeks. His last five starts have yielded three wins and two seconds.

Against a similar field at Gore 11 days ago, he flashed home for a close second to Stoneybroke from a seemingly hopeless pocket on the rails on the home turn.

Abbey Knight, whose racing days may be nearing an end, has taken a fresh lease of life since being mated. She made ground when third at Gore and came home well for third at her last start at Invercargill.

Dear Sir will be all the rage for the Wyndham Stakes, second leg of the T.A.B. double.

He easily beat similar fields at Gore and Invercargill before finishing sixth against the best Canterbury three-year-olds a fortnight ago. On that occasion, he raced fiercely from behind the mobile barrier for the first time. His inexperience told against him as he cut a pace over the opening 800 m that was impossible to sustain.

' Matai Skipper, much better suited by roomy tracks, will be the only runner backed to beat him with any sort of confidence. The feature race is the New Zealand Kindergarten Stakes in which Southland's best youngsters, Comedy Lad, Honkin Del and Tac Warrior will clash.
