Mares dominate Avondale feature

Special correspondent

Auckland

Mares seem to dominate Avondale's ■ big race tomorrow with Maurita, Daisy and Rama foremost among the prospects. All three are Sydney Cup entries and certain to attract widespread attention, if only on that account.

Maurita, Daisy and Rama have made names for themselve as thoroughly capable gallopers over 2200 m, the distance they are being set in the main race at Avondale, the $50,000 IZB Classic. Maurita and Daisy, with their minor placings in the DB Auckland Cup and Wrightson Wellington Cup, are already well-performed, over 3200 m, the Sydney Cup distance. And it is too early yet to write off Rama at the distance, even if she has a couple of failures against her name.

Daisv finished fourth after pacemaking in the Wrightson Wellington Cup so her effort held merit. She had been third in the DB Auckland Cup, almost in line with the winner, Fontaincourt, and, in one race meanwhile, finished sixth behind McGinty at Ellerslie last Saturday. The way Daisy went in her training yesterday morning, at Takanini, where she has stopped over for the two big Auckland meetings, suggested that she improved with last Saturday’s run. While unable to get the 3200 m of the cup at Trentham, Rama made an excellent job of 2400 m just a week later during the Wellington meeting with an all-the-way win. She then came back with an eye-catching fifth over 1600 m at Ellerslie last Saturday, just the run likely to have her in. top form again for this week-end. Rama has 53kg, the amount with which she won at Trentham. Maurita is on the same mark, both to receive 2.5 kg from Daisy and 4kg from the top weight, Shivaree.

Shivaree dropped so far out of it in the early running of the Air New Zealand Stakes last Saturday that he had no chance of getting near McGinty in the end: it was something of a wonder that he managed to reach fifth place. Shivaree, now an eight-year-old, is probably not as good as he was but he looks well enough. Kev's Boy has. turned in two of his best performances at Avondale, to win an Allrounder and finish second

in an Avondale Cup. He has to be respected, despite his draw.

The Dimple, from Southland and Four Crowns from Foxton, are two well-per-formed visitors. Both are entitled to respect. Race 1: 11.35: Jetbet Highweight, $3500; 1600 m.
