Rosetown Lad gallops strongly at Trentham

Special correspondent Wellington

The Wellington Derby winner. Rosetown Lad. looked in fine shape for his test in the UDC Finance Handicap when he galloped strongly at Trentham yesterday.

Rosetown Lad likes the course. He won the Derby at Trentham and then ran second in the Trentham Stakes on the final day of the Cup meeting. In one run since. Rosetown Lad missed in the Dalgety at Te Rapa, but that failing did come on an easy track.

Work yesterday took place on the outside of the course proper and the plough. Both

were fast and work was affected by a stirring northerly.

Rosetown Lad had a local. Becamber. for company for 1600 m on the plough. The 1400 m took Imin 28s, the last 800 in 525. Rosetown Lad was running clear at the finish of the final 600 in 37.55. Another to attract attention for the first leg of the T.A.B. double tomorrow was Bold Supreme which worked over a round easily enough on the outside of the course proper. His last 800 metres took 545, the final 600 39.55. He has won his last two and he looks a nice type. Other first leg runners, Amrica. Alloy and Crawford’s Boy were also at the track, but they escaped with light tasks. Spasiba ran 800 metres on the outside of the course proper in 52.15, the last 600 in 38.55. A runner in the second leg of the double, the 2ZB Golden Mile. Spasiba won on the final day of the cup meeting and then ran third behind Clear Gold at Te Rapa and third again behind Ringtrue at Ellerslie last Saturday.

The South Islander Reingard had the local, The Musician for company down the chute. They left 800 behind in 545, the last 600 in 395. Reingard was behind early, but was clear in front at the finish.

A Rapier II colt, Reingard is trained at Riccarton by Brydon Mills. He won first up at Timaru with a fine late bid and then was sixth last month in his only other outing at Riccarton. Candy Case worked a couple of rounds on the plough, then - ended with 600 in 375.

El Rana showed great speed to beat Merman at the end of 800 in 48.95, the last 600 in 35.75. It was a fine trial, He will be Paul Beckett's first ride since moving to Trentham. Merman is expected to reappear on the later days of the meeting.

Among the visitors given light tasks were Clear Gold and Michael Pitman’s Riccarton visitors, Lady Beebee and Jack Frost, which both come north with good form.
