New Ghana putsch
NZPA-Reuter Accra. Ghana Ghanaian security forces are hunting the leaders of a foiled coup plot, the third attempt in five months to topple the Revolutionary Government of Flight Lieutenant Jerry Rawlings.
Accra radio said that nine soldiers had been arrested on Sunday in the Ghanaian capital, in a house full of arms and ammunition. They had been preparing to kill Flight Lieutenant Rawlings and his top aides, and seize power, said the radio. There had been a link between a coup attempt in November and the latest one. The ringleaders were still at large, it said. A speech to be read out on State radio if the coup was successful, documents detailing money given to the plotters, and a list of assassination targets including the Ghanaian leader, 'were found in the house in Accra.
Two soldiers who were part of the plot had been injured in a shooting at the house, the radio said.
The alleged plot leaders were Major Akanson, Lieu-tenant-Colonel Abidoh. and Dr Ishmael Antwi.
