Portable toilets at park

Hired portable toilets for women would be provided at Lancaster Park for future uses similar to the one-day international cricket match last week-end, the Christchurch City Council’s clean air and health committee was told yesterday. Councillors said they were concerned about toilet conditions that had continued for some years. “As one who has followed test matches over the years, I can bear witness to the fairly primitive conditions,” said Cr Mollie Clark. The Victory Park Board should be asked to provide" more up-to-date toilets for both men and women. “The excuse that it has

1 been mainly a male domain just doesn’t hold water,” said Cr Clark. . •’ I Cr Charles Manning, the ! committee’s chairman, said ! that the board, in addition to

providing portable toilets for popular events, would take other steps to overcome problems. The water supply, to one women’s cloakroom would be improved to ensure adequate service to toilet facilities.

. Careful checks would be done to deal quickly with any blocked drains, and adequate paper hand towel supplies would be provided. Park staff would also provide closer supervision of the toilets to ensure that nuisances did no occur.

Cr Morgan Fahey said that “a very grave health hazard” had been created by conditions at the cricket match. “The health hazard here was, in fact, a bad organisation by the operators of the premises,” said Mr A. P. Millthorpe, the Chief City Health Inspector.
