Monday last day for tax payments

'Taxpayers have only until Mpnday to pay without penally last year's taxes and 1983 provisional assessments. -Returns so far had been "Slightly up" on those last year, said the Inland Revenue Department's district commissioner. Mr A. N. McPherson, yesterday.

"Tax packs" should arrive in taxpayers' letter-boxes during the next fortnight. IRS forms for salary and wage earners are to be returned to the department by May 7. The six-page form will be similar to last year's but it will feature two’new rebates introduced in the last Budget to replace the lower income and family rebates.

The new rebates are the principal income-earner rebate. which allows the principal income-earner to claim back on a total income of under $14,600. and the family rebate, which provides for a claim if a family's total income is less than $19,160 a year. .Mr McPherson said that anyone who had not received a" "tax pack" by the end of March should get in touch with the Inland Revenue Department.

Another change in taxation rules is that all employees will have to complete a new code declaration. Certificates were sent to employers last month for distribution to staff. The forms require employees to fill in their IRD number, which is kept on record by employers. • A further minor change was in superannuation deductions, said Mr McPherson. From April 1. members of contributing superannuation schemes could claim an annual exemption of $l2OO. The figure had risen from $BOO a year.
