Northcote expressway

Sir,—Mr Rich, chairman of the Waimairi District Council, must be supported in his move to have the Northcote expressway top priority. The benefits to surrounding areas will be very considerable; also the eventual linking up with the city system. In voting, the east side of Waimairi, with two riding members, is at a disadvantage against riding members on the west side, whose members put up such pathetic arguments to delay proceedings. We- do not want a repetition of the Christchurch Airport extension here.— Yours, etc., W. FOOT. March 1, 1983.

Cricket prayers Sir—Rather than “debunking

Christian propaganda," Mr May’s letters (February 15 and 21) serve to emphasise the emptiness of atheistic humanism. The books he refers to (and incidentally there are not two books of Joshua), show that God “takes sides" only with His own Holy character. He chose Israel to benefit mankind. He used Israel to remove cancers destroying society. He punished Israel, impartially, when it also sinned. Napoleon said “God was on the side of the big battalions." God disillusioned him with snowflakes. In regard to World War II and prayer, true Christians in the 1930 s were praying that their peoples would repent and return to God, rather than praying “save our skins” prayers. It was a time of Godforgetfulness and moral permissiveness, our own free choice. Why should God intervene? Nevertheless, when there was true national humbling and calling on God for help, as at Dunkirk, He did intervene, as history records.—Yours, etc.. h. g. Oram. February 22, 1983.
